My wife is starting to get interested in riding. I thought I try to make the back seat a bit more comfortable for her by adding a backrest. Looking on the Suzuki OEM page, I found a backrest and mount set #99950-70272 for $214.95 which is 12 in. tall. I also saw the Billet Backrest Tall (99950-70390) for 199.95 and the Billet Backrest Low (99950-70391) for the same price. It was interesting that the low backrest is advertised as being 12 5/8 inches tall from the rear bolt and the tall is 12.0 inches tall. I guess there is a mistake somewhere. I would also have to buy the mounting hardware with the Billet Backrests ad would like to add a rack to the backrest.

My questions; does anyone on this forum have one of the above backrests on their bikes and how do you like it? This is probably going to involve the fender bolt removal. Will I run into a problem with realigning the bolts after they are removed? Thanks for your replies.

I prefer the looks of the low backrest. Yes, you will need to remove the fender bolts. If you have never done it, it can be a *****. Here is what you need to do. Take the front right one out first without touching the others. Put the bolt through the mounting bracket and into the fender and get it started. If it does not start, ie if the fender has shifted, then go ahead and remove ALL the bolts. Now with all the bolts removed, start the front right. You may need to grab the back of the rear fender with your left hand and move it around to lign up the hole. Good Luck!

My wife was a first timer and on any length of ride she did not like the short, so on this bike I got a long one, But waiting from the dealer to get it in from backorder. If she has any fears about riding, I would get the tall for her comfort and security. And to me it looks just fine.

I have the low round bar OEM backrest, with a big oval Mustang pad. My GF really like the new pad versus the little OEM "square of pain" I just put the pad on yesterday, I should take some pics this weekend after I install the fiberglass bags and clean her up.

Do not, I repeat, do not take all the bolts off at the same time unless you really have to. It really is murder to get them back in. Took me 2 hours and 6 walk aways before I got them back in.

JJKJR,
Checking the "official" Suzuki site, the tall billet backrest is 16 5/8 inches from the rear seat bolt.

When I rode on the back of hubby's 1500 Vulcan, he had a lower backrest and the dumb thing hit me right in the small of the back. On short rides it wasn't bad, but for any long trips, you're wife will be much more comfortable with the taller one.

I have to warn you though, that passenger seat on the Volusia leaves a lot to be desired.

I added the short one to my C50. I had my wife try them both on other bikes and she liked where the shorter one hit her in the back. Plus got to admit the shorter one does look better. Got to keep mama happy...They don't call it the ***** seat for nothing.

After putting the Mustang pad (large oval) on the OEM short backrest bar, my GF is quite happy. She complained about the OEM little square pad hitting her in the back, The Mustang is wider and higher, spreading out the contact area and makinf for more comfort.
