I have purchased a new Savage 652cc and it back fires when deaccelerating. The dealer claims that this is common with these bikes and states that there is nothing can be done

The other problem is a loud whine again when deaccelerating. The dealer claims that it is the belt drive and again there is nothing that can be done.

Can anyone tell me if they have had similar problems and what was done.

Try this link for the backfiring, probably applies to your bike also.

Are you running it on regular or high octane, if your using high octane start by going back down to regular.

When I bought my LC1500 new, it backfired, dealer(s) had same kind of excuses. Everyone had suggestions, block of this tube, block of that tube, mount the bike from the other side, always facing south, etc., etc. The real problem was that it needed some adjusting in the carb. When I finally found a mechanic and dealer that knew how to fix things, the problem suddenly disappeared!! I fear that just because dealers sell cycles doesn't mean they know how to service them. They get the sale then screw you if you have problems or they will keep messing with it with no or worse results. I suggest trying to find a good mechanic which sometimes is a pain.

I plugged the tubes on the little emissions thing on the left side of my bike with golf tees. It stopped after that.

Find a better dealer!!! The carb needs an adjustment, nothing more. It is probably running a bit rich.

I dissagree. Lean, not rich. Backfiring usually is from a lean condition. If this haven't been done already, drill out the caps that cover the fuel screws so you can adjust the fuel mixture on the pilot circuit. Another thing that will probably help is adding a 20/1000 shim under the clip on the needle.
