I have a 2003 Katana and today I had problems starting it. It has been sitting for a week due to rain. I've noticed this problem off and on before. When I first try to start the engine with the choke at 1/4, it fires for a bit and I give it a little gas to get the RPM's up. The RPM's rise and then it dies. This whole time the engine sounds "soggy" as I call it. It doesn't sound as crisp as it does when I start it up after one or two days of sitting on the kickstand. It floods after this type of start up, and I have to wait a few minutes before it even fires again, let alone maintain enough RPM's to keep the bike running. Any Help would be great

Don't give it gas right away. you need to let the engine warm up. Let it idle with the "choke on" for a minute or 2. If you have a gauge to tell you the temp. let it get up to 100 degrees. then turn off the choke and it should idle nicely @ 1000 rpms. You should not be starting up a cold bike and trying to throttle the gas, it will bog out. Let it sit there and idle, when mine is close to 100 degrees it usually idles it self up to 3,000 rpm.

Hope this helps.

So no throttle at all during startup? I have to go by the RPMs and the sound of the engine because I don't have a temp gauge. Thanks for the input, I'll try it out tomorrow.

Memphis, your bike idles at 3,000 RPMs at 100 degrees? Wowza!! Mine doesn't idle above 1,200 even when it's thoroughly warmed up.

it idles up to 3 k rpm when the "choke" is on. then I shut the choke and it idles nicely @ 1 k rpm.

Mine is the same way. 1k when chke is off. One question though...When the weather gets down to 50 degrees, the bike is not giving me much power. I have the throttle down plenty and it just struggles along. Is this a cold weather problem? Seems to have started doing this just when the weather cooled off.

Its a 1980 Suzuki GS550, bought used two months ago in North NJ.

Any help would be appreciated.

Coves27 hasn't posted since December. Funny how new guys always dig up the old bones.
