I saw a bit ago (and can't find the orignal post) someone got thier 1K04 gixxer stolen (owned for 2 weeks), when it was right in front of thier store at or around lunchtime. I wanted to know real bad if he had the forks locked, or if he had a rotor lock on it.
If anyone else has had thier bike ganked I would like to know what security measures the bikes were under, time of day, location, and length of time you were away. I am trying to get a feeling for the circumstances in which bikes are grabbed. Let me know of you or your friends experiences and not those passed around as rumors.

Also, has anyone had someone cut thier helmet strap to steal it when it is latched to the underseat?

thanx

A good friend of mine had his '01 gsxr 600 stolen from his apartment complex in San Diego, CA. He only had it for two weeks before it was stolen. It's a real shame. He said he lived in a quiet neighborhood with mostly elderly neighbors. He kept a disc lock on his bike, kept the fork locked, and kept a cover on it to avoid attention. Nonetheless, it was stolen. He thinks his landscaper had something to do with it. He saw him ride it a few times and he probably told someone about it. Sometimes that's all it takes....for someone to tell someone else that you have a nice bike. It was recovered about a month later....in pieces.

Parked my ZX11 at a girl's house on Q street in Sacramento. We got there about 4 am. Kryptonite disc lock and forks locked. By 8 AM someone had punched the ignition trying to steal it. It was the first time I had parked the bike there.

Never had anyone mess with helmets locked to hooks.

A friend of mine locked his lid to his underseat latch.

Left the bike in a car-park.

The helmet was still there when he got back, but was a little - damp!

After closer inspection it appeared some kind passer-by had decided to use it as a public toilet.

He tells me he rode the 3 miles home without it on and binned it when he got home.

I've never left my lid strapped un-attended to my bike since I heard this story.

I always choose not to lock my helmet to my bike for personal reasons. If it's not kids walking by putting fingerprints all over the shield, it's insects crawling into it, or the sun scorching it, making it painful to pick up and put on sometimes. It can be a hassle carrying around a helmet sometimes, but to me it's worth it.

I couldn't agree more. There's always someone out there who wants your bike as much as you do and those are the people you have to watch out for.

As for lids being stolen. It if is locked, no one is going to try to steal it to use it again. Once the strap is cut the lid is usless. anyone who rides a bike and is planning to steal would know that. Only mess that would happen to it is from people just wanting to screw wit ya. I use to lock it but now I bring it into the stores with me.
As for stealling a bike I invested in a kryptonite lock for the front disc. $20 and no one can cut it off the way they are made. If someone really wants my baby bad enough they will have 3-4 guys pick it up and put it in the back of a truck and mess around with it at their shop.

Hope this helps. any if you get a lock. think of a way to remember it is on or you will try to ride with it on and cause a few $100 worth of damage. I got a cord that I place around my handle bars to remind me when I sit there. you could use a rope to tie to the throttle or a colored rubber band. Anything but make sure you do something. First time you put it on, ur still programed to jump on and take off and then there goes ur front end.

//With helmet laws being what they are, they'll cut your strap and steal your helmet and wear it strapless - no use in an accident, but keeps them from getting pulled over.

//Another evil of the helmet law....

A disc lock by itself doesn't offer much protection. You can just slip a skateboard under the front wheel and easily roll it off into a truck or van. Can you chain your bike to anything?

when i get a bike, im going to go with this oone alarm system that if some one tries to steal it, it sends a beep, a beep to me with a keychain remote, and it disengages the starter. try alarmguard.com

Having a motion sensor on your bike would really help, when someone approachs your bike the alarm will sound a warning signal then if the person doesnt back away the alarm will sound fully. Also when someone steals your bike there not doing it for the ride there doing it for the parts, the most popular bikes that are being stolen are Gixxers, CBR's, R6and ninjas

if you get a disc lock make sure you get one thats brightly colored, Like a neon yellow. Get some obscene color, to attract their attention to it, and yours. Pretty embarrasing to try to take off with it on.

Thanx everyone for your input.
I lock my helmet under my seat when I am within eyeshot of it, or will be gone less than 30 minutes. I used to leave it on at work (secure parking lot at the gov't) but i didn't like it in the sun all day. I have a disc lock, and stick it on when I have to go further away from the bike, or in high profile areas, just to discourage people from moving it at all. I usually remember the disc lock, but I place it at the very top most portion of the rotor near the caliper, the other day I kinda spaced but couldn't even go foward. I am planning on getting the alarm with the beeper, when and if I am going into the city more times. As I put more and more cosmetics on it, I get a little more sketched, thanx all.

I've had a helmet stolen & my gixxer 750 stolen before, both were seperate times. I never leave my helmet out with the bike now. My bike was locked on the side of the house behind a fence, with a disc lock on it.
There had to be at least 4 people there to carry the thing off. Definitely not a fun thing to come home to. I was glad however that I had just sold my dirt bike. I now have a garage to keep my toys in!
