OK, this year was the firsr time I have canceled my insurance for the winter, and haven't sold the vehicle. (If you remember, I pay an assload for insurance, so its MUCH cheaper for me to cancel.)

BRING BACK YOUE LICENSE PLATE IMMEDIATELY AFTER CANCELLING INSURANCE.

I unfortunately was not told this and waited over 3 weeks(I havent recieved a bill, and I kept my mouth shut when I turned im my plates) In NYS, you are charged EIGHT DOLLARS for every day you keep the plate once the insurance is canceled. That means if you took your bike off the road then 6 months later try to re-register it; you will owe the state $1,440 before you can insure it. Don't forget to do this.

This next part is not for sure.

I heard if you kept the plates for a month (for example) then turned them in to the DMV; if you wanted to set up insurance again you are given a choice:

-Pay the 8 dollar a day fee or

-Wait the amount of days that you kept the plate until you can register

Paying is a *****, and waiting a designated time can also suck. for those of you who didn't know this I'm just trying to spread the word. Ask some freinds if this is unclear.

I'm sure glad I live where it's possible to ride year round. This winterizing, cancelling registration and insurance stuff sure seems like a huge hassle every year!

Got to hand it to you folks that do it, I couldn't! :bows:

Speaking of insurance (I'm on topic, I swear  ), anybody know any reasonable insurers in Florida? I'm going to need to get my '95 GSX600F legal in the next few months, and I don't want to get monetarily molested in the process :?

I'm sure I could go and check out the individual insurer's sites, but I figure someone on here might be able to give me some seasoned advice or steer me away from companies that aren't bike friendly.

Can't speak for Florida, but State Farm in California has treated me well for a long time, even with some claims.

Over here, the insurance company is listed on the registration papers, so my insurance is cancelled automatically when I turn in the plates. As soon as the DMV de-registers the plate, it generates a letter to my insurance company telling them that the bike has been de-registered.

When I want to re-register the bike in Spring, I have to get a proof-of-insurance certificate from my insurance company, then take that to the DMV and pick up the plate. As soon as I have registered the bike, another letter is sent to my insurance company to "activate" the insurance again.

If I cancel my insurance without returning the plates, I receive a nasty letter from the DMV, since the insurance company notifies the DMV that I am no longer insured. If I change insurance companies, I have to go to the DMV and have new registration documents printed, showing the new insurance company.

Some things are just more efficient in Switzerland :) :) :)

Another vote for State Farm - been with them for 24 years in 5 or 6 different states. No real complaints about the two claims during that period.

Because WV is insurance hell and I thought I might do better with somebody else, I got some quotes last week for the car, truck and bike. What an eye opener! Best quote elsewhere was 50% higher for the car and truck, and almost 250% higher for the bike.

That's who I'm using. Best rates going for this area.

How are they on Comp claims? I figured they would rake me over, so I'm cool with my repairs this time around.

Just an FYI. In Florida, you don't have to carry any insurance for your motorcycle. If you want to ride without a helmet, you have to have at least $10,000 in personal medical insurance. With only one exception that I know of, the state doesn't require riders to carry any kind of liability, comprehensive, or collision coverage. The exception is that if you are responsible for an accident where personal or property damage occurs, the state will require that you buy liability insurance and maintain the policy for three years.

That being said, I think it would be foolish not to carry liability.

I had my 1k knocked over hard, while parked, by an idiot in a truck, right in front of me!    Long story short, he was uninsured. My uninsured motorist covered the 5k tab to repair my then 3 month old baby! Need a fair estimate? Get into Simi Cycles! PM me if you need more info.

I am not in Florida, but I like www.bikeline.com, I'm just glad I don't have to do that deregistering stuff. If your deregistered uninsured bike is stolen in the winter, what happens? :?

I'm glad I can drop my coverage down to comprehensive-only during winter months. That register/deregister crap is for the birds!

I have a 95 GSX700F that I insure through Progressive. Since the bike isn't worth much, I only have theft and liability. The total cost is about $80 per year. I should mention that I bought the insurance on-line which was much cheaper than going to a local Progressive agent.

Insurance in NY won't let you do that. They assume with your bike sitting there in a shed/garage/barn is could catch fire, tree fall on barn or be stolen. It's bullshit what the insurance companies do to us 20 year old bikers! Heres the kicker, when I canceled my insurance with progressive, it was before the end of the term so they made me pay 10% of tha annual rate to compensate for that. So in reality I had to write them a check for 137 dollars just to cancel it. (assholes) Not going back to them again.

State farm won't insure my motorcycle unless I have a car with them; which I don't. I'm just thinking about not insuring it next year and using an old plate we have in the shed :D JK

When I got my first bike, All State was the only company that would reasonably insure it, and and I didn't have to insure my car under them as well. You can check with them and see if they still do that.
