People change the sprockets generally when the chain is replaced there are a number of reasons for doing this, if it is a service thing then replace all otherwise it depends on how old the chain and sprockets are.

It has nothing to do with power or torque advantages, you replace them because they are worn.

It is recommended that chain and both sprockets are replaced all together so that they all 'wear' in at the same rate will fit together better, the chain will stretch slightly and the teeth in the sprockets bend a minute fraction but all at the same rate so they fit well. Putting a new chain on old sprockets never works as well because it has not been worn in around them.

Sorry having a 'mare today trying to explain anything :| ....................anyone else care to take up where i've missed stuff out?

you can increase or decrease the number of teeth on ur front or rear sprocket to alter the bikers performance, many people add a couple of teeth on the rear or decrease on the front to improve acceleration and decrease the rear or increase front to improve top end.

however as already said when u replace a chain u should change them as the chain causes specific shapinf of the teeth

one down on the front sproket is approximately the same as 2 1/2 up in the rear. Gains are in accel but you lose about 8% on top end. If you go up on the front sproket then you get just the opposite.

If you want more top end, like the guys told you, your low end will suffer

going up 1 tooth in the front, or down 2 in the rear, is close to the same.
Price " Both Sprockets ", then pick which one you want to replace.

Sprocket Specialists is a good company, they make all kinds of sprockets.

eBay is what it is, good luck.

You always have to consider "why do you need more top end ?"
You are geared "best" if tou reach top speed in top gear at the end of the fastest section of the track.
That's competing of course, if you want to go from east to west coast on your RM, consider the " mileage" gearing, biggest front sprocket smallest rear.

As for power/torque, you don't gain "yiksjit", consider sprocketstuff just for what it is, -gearing-, like when in first gear, acceleration is quick, 5th=slower but higher speed.

True... remember sprockets do nothing for increasing Horse Power it has nothing to do with that. As posted above changing the number of teeth on sprockets will increase top end and decrease bottom end or increase bottom end and decrease top end depending on what you do.

Personally I would not increase top end on street bikes as how often can you really go 150+ mph... but you can kick a peoples A$% at the light with the right gearing, skill, and bike.

I've been looking at changing the front sprocket on my Marauder. The folks on the Marauder-Intruder board highly recommend it mainly because the Marauder's RPMs at highway speeds are kind of high. Here's some info I found:

5th gear rpm @60 mph are:
15 tooth - 3884
16 tooth - 3641
17 tooth - 3427

And a nice quote:

The front sprocket change is one of the easiest, cheapest and best
mods you can do on a 'Rauder. The sprocket change affects lower rpm
operation very little, but makes a bigger difference at cruise speeds.
A 17 will drop your rpm about 600 - 800 rpm at 70 mph. I've been on
several +400 mile trips with a 16 tooth, and it way more comfortable
than the 15.
Bear in mind this very Marauder specific ;)
