Does anybody know what the top speed of the Suzuki S40 is once the engine is completely broken in and also when it is new? Also does anybody know what the gas mileage is before and after engine break in. Just bought the S40 three days ago and have 151 miles on it. I love it as there is not a single bike out there that can outrun it to 60(except crotch rockets) but after 60 the real cruisers take over and prevail. I used to have an 85 Rebel 250 and it weighed 300 pounds and this S40 650 weighs only 352 which is why it must be so fast to 60. Anyway any answers or experiences from other S40 riders or anybody else that may know would be appreciated.

I have no answers, but I'd just like to add that I'm weeks away from purchasing the S40 myself, so I'm also interested in learning the answers to these questions.

So, c'mon all you S40 riders out there, fess up! :)

"Thumper" Website

I don't own an S40/Savage so I cannot write from experience but I did find some information about the "thumper" from this website:

http://www.heise-workstations.de/ls650/LS650-e.html

According to this website the top speed for an S40/Savage is about 87 mph. The engine developes 31 hp at 5400 rpm and the 0 to 60 time is about 8 seconds. Depending on how you ride it the machine can deliver 4 to 6 liter per 100 km; about 200 km or 125 miles per tank full.

Not that I was asked, but I'm feeling evil this morning since I can't ride! :eek:crap:

My little gixxer?
Top speed, I have no need to find out. Had it to 176mph and that's more than enough.
150 Horsepower
0 to 60 - 2.8 seconds
0 to 100 5 seconds
1/4 mile- 9.75 @ 148mph
Fuel cap-4.8 gallons, 32 to 46 mpg depending on ride style.

Not bad for an old guy!

I would have to say that the top speed is a little higher then that. At least 90 and the 60 time is definetly lower then 8 seconds. I would say more like 5.5-6.5 to 60.

Top speed is well above legal speed limits and even fast enough for Los Angeles Freeways. But it is not very comfortable at 80+. Top speed will increase if you open up the exhaust and re-jet the carb; 95+ is obtainable according to those who have done so.

Gas mileage varies inversely to speed/acceleration. I tend to twist the handle and get about 100 miles per refill or 2.2 or so gallons of regular. I want to make a trip on two-land backroads at 45-50 mph to see if I can approach the 80mpg I got from my GS450E under the same conditions.

My 2003 Savage (S40 from 2005 on) can do 135 km/h on flat land without wind (measured with the GPS not the bike's speedo which shows 140) but is stock and I'm 1.85 m and 90 kg. My son's Honda Shadow 750 will beat the Savage at 0 to 100 km/h by a good margin any time, regardless of who's riding it (we changed bikes to make sure is not the rider).
The gas consumption is about 4 L/100 km when ridden by me (top speed of 90 km/h, very gentle on gas) and it did not change after 500 km. The bike has now 5,500 km.
For the English system numbers are:
Speed: 84 mph
Mileage: 58 mpg
My Height: 6' 1"
My weight: 200 lbs
Odometer: 3400
