I have a VZ800 and took off the one-up seat to ride solo, but I just ordered a set of saddlebags for it... Do I need to put the seat back on in order to use the saddlebags? Or is there a way that I can use them without putting the seat back on? Also, is there a backrest for the solo seat for my bike? I think the bike looks better w/o the passenger seat, but I would like to get a backrest...

There are back rest out there but you might have to change seats. I have also heard that a back rest makes you sit realy forward, almost to forward. As far as the bags. Im sure you can just throw them over the fender. Careful of the paint though.

The rear seat does a nice job of helping your throwover saddlebags stay in place. Personally I think once you're putting saddlebags on there you are abandoning the cool/clean look that you get without the rear seat so might as well put it back on.

That and as long as you get the bag supports you should be ok. The supports will keep it in place and stop them from rubbing bad places

If you are talking about a backrest for the driver position they do in fact make you sit forward more. If you are talking about the passenger backrest they also make the passenger sit forward more as well,,, but that also depends on the bike and how much room the rear pillion has.

there are 2 driver backrests that I know of for the vz800. The one I had bought was made by highway hawk. I sold it shortly after I got it as it made me sit to far foward. Even in it's furthest back position. Protac also makes one, but I don't think it looks as nice. I have not personally tried the one from Protac but it is half the cost of the highway hawk($230ish) Protac($130ish)

I think all of you have a point... I just took off the seat because I don't to encourage people to ask for rides... I could always say no, but I don't wanna seem rude, and you'd be suprised how many people just have elmets lying around, so riding with only one helmet don't work... Also, I will only ride with the bags if I'm going on a long ride, or when I have to carry something for work, so they won't be on the bike all the time... I like the look of the bike w/o the passenger seat or bags, but sometimes ya just need 'em, so I wanna make sure I have them for just such a situation... That's why I wanna make sure that they're easy on/easy off... Any idea where I can get the supports? Do I get them based on the type of bags I bought, or are the supports "just supports", you know, one size fits all??

The supports are bike specific. Not bag specific.

I bought TourMaster saddlebags with my C50. The throw over stays on the bike while I can easily remove the bags by unzipping them at the top. You could easily remove the whole system if you don't have the passenger seat as they just use quick clip to connet them to the supports.

Good luck

I have a,, and I believe it is Tourmaster as well,, bag that looks like a gym bag. It has a rubberized bottom and it has four bungee cords with plastic hooks that pull from the bottom to fasten it down. I bought that bag because I wanted something I could sit on the rear seat and remove when I wanted to. The bungee cords pull down to the fender lip where I just hook them to it. It has snaps where I could buy some saddlebags that fasten to it as well. But I just wanted the top bag. When I install my sissy bar and rear rack it will fasten to the sissy bar and sit on the rear rack.

That bag also has openings on each end where you can stand the bag upright and access it from the top. It is made from that Cortech material. I like it because it is removable with just the four bungees.

These guys make drivers back rest, it comes ready to mount, and is very comfortable on long rides. You can mount it with or without the passenger seat. Me and three of my buddies have one for our three Volusia's and one T50 and they are fully adjustable, tilt forward for mounting, and do not place you too far forward unless of course you have arms like an Orangutan! They also make other accessories. Note that the dollars posted are Canadian dollars, US dollars are cheaper.
