Has anyone one of you guys took your bike to the dealer to get it worked on. I just took mine, because I didn't want to get into something I wasn't sure about. The labor rate is $55 an hour :b-wtf: , but I had to get it done. I don't really have time to work on my bike. i work third shift and I sleep during the day :eek:crap: Might as well spend it now, cause i can't take it with me when I die! :mrgreen:

Took mine in for the 600-mile service. I was quoted $300 over the phone. When I get there, they tell me that didn't include materials (oil and filter). I'm no dummy. I called around and got pricing for out-the-door service. They stuck to the $300, but complained. This despite the fact that they admitted that they quoted it.

Anyhow, they did a great job in my opinion. Showed me my used oil and filter (I marked it before I dropped off the bike - I don't trust ANYONE). Washed the bike and it looked better than the day I picked it up new.

I'm not too sure about the labor rate they charged me as I don't know how long it actually took them, but around here $70/hr is the going rate for bikes. $55 seems OK.

You can do the work yourself and still not void the warranty! So long as you can discuss the material intelligently, they can't really prove you did it wrong, or that you were incompetent (unless, of course, you do something wrong or incompetent).

I just called around getting quotes on the 600 mile maintenance for my Marauder. I called the three closest dealerships to me. One wanted $195 for everything. The next one wanted $150 for the service, which consisted of oil, filter, and lube PLUS an additional $128 for the valve adjustment. That seems like a rip to me. The third one (and furthest away) will do the service and valve adjustment for $165. I think I can deal with that.

I called around for my 600-mile maintenance too. One dealer told me about $160 for the "bare minimuim" and about $300 for the full blown Suzuki-recommendation. He said that the $300 scared lots of people off, so they started offering a cheaper alternative.

I hope to never have my bike back at the dealer for service. I'm trying to learn as much as I can. But some things like new tires and "unknowns"??? I'll take it in. I'm not a professional mechanic and I don't intend to be. Nor do I want too many dollars tied up in tools. Besides, it seems that whenever someone finds out I can work on a car or a bike, I end up fixing their damn trunk latch or something.

Why do they lock you in trunk in the first place? :mrgreen:

do it all yourself. not only do you know exactly what is going on with the bike, but you learn the inner workings of it as well so that when something does go wrong, you have a better idea of what it is.

Yes, personnally, as soon as the warranty is over, I'm doing the job, or most of it myself.

Next purchase for me is the service manual.
Why buy one when you can download the factory manual for free!!!!

==> http://www.sv650.org/sv_manuals.htm

I got mine download and printed it out at work on an Optra laser printer. Looks great and easy to replace worn, dirty and ripped pages if I need to. Should be about 300-350 single sided pages.

I downloaded my Marauder manual and printed it out. The resolution is horrible since it was black and white to begin with and then each page was scanned into pdf format. I can read most of the text, but the pictures are just big black blotches.

Being single with a car and two bikes, I live in my trunk. It's quiet and private and dark when I need to sleep. And it smells nice - like spare tires and leftover Harley and Gixxer parts.

It's home.
