Anyone have info on the purpose/function of the SET valve. Local wisdom removes it when installing a slip on pipe. They say you don't need it. Then why did Suzuki put it there?

I had the FI light come on while riding. the code indicated that the SET (little computer controlled butterfly valve in the mid-pipe) was defective My old mechanic just snipped the wire. All the research I've done says just forget the valve.
just an FYI
It does do something. It restricts exhaust flow at lower rpms to give better bottom end performance, and opens wide at upper rpms. It works alot like Yamahas EXUP valve, which they have been using for many years.
