Am I the only one that has a problem with my left-hand shoe lace getting hung on the shifter . . . like every 5 minutes? It seems like every time I go to put my foot down, the damned lace is around the shifter. I double-tie, but it doesn't seem to help.

Maybe I need some of those shoe-tie thingies that kindergarteners wear. :|

Sorry....I don't have that problem. Probably because I wear high boots and my pants pull over the laces. I would say be careful, but I'm pretty sure you have more experience on bikes than I do. :)

Sorry Mark, I never wear shoes with laces when I'm on my bike ... I'm too paranoid that exactly that will happen, and that 550 lbs of hot metal will come down on my leg because I can't get my foot down ...

I've never had that problem...I did drag the toe of my boot on the ground once when I was leaning into a turn...woke me up real quick!

As a sad testimonial to the deterioration that my brain has endured . . . I never even thought of that.

I wear steel-toed boots when I ride, so there's plenty of rooom for tuckage. Just never thought about it.

Usually wear my boots (no laces), but when I was in college I used to just wear my Nikes or whatever... never have had that problem. I think it's just you :p

i have a pair of hightop basketball sneaks that are zipper and velcro strap....these will do the trick for laces

but i have a question....do most people wear boots for safety/protection reasons (mind you i am talking about cruiser bikes here, not street).

When our kids were little, we bought some container deals that you slid the shoe laces in then screwed the end cap on. They came in really neat designs like Cookie Monster, Big Bird, etc. Might try those. Har har har, just kiddin' but couldn't resist.

all the riders i know wear only boots while riding. and yeah, all are cruiser riders.

i own two pairs of leather boots for riding, but one pair i bought online and is not really functional, unfortunately.

I wear 'em for protection. They won't keep your ankle from being turned backwards or anything, but in the event that you get to sliding on the pavement, I reckon they might save you some skin.

c50tiger: I knew it was just me. I was just getting further confirmation.

oldgeezer: Believe it or not, I looked for a pic of those to post, but I couldn't find anything for kids. Plenty of stuff for adults, but none for kids. I didn't look THAT hard, so I'm sure there's something out there.

WRT adults needing these things . . . apparently those mall-walkers don't screw around. One blown lace and you could lose control and plow into a bunch of innocent shoppers. At those speeds . . . could be casualties.

Shell out the clams and get a decent set of riding boots. The money you save on medical bills and the pain after surgery, missed work and recovery you have to endure will MORE than offset the $200 - $300 for the boots.

There. That is an excuse you can give your wife.

I've had my pants get caught a time or two at stoplights. That's an altogether unpleasant feeling.

I don't have the steel toes, although it's perfectly fine if you want to go that way. What you really really have to watch for is the oil-resistant non-skid sole. As you've surely noticed, road surfaces at stoplights/signs seem to accumulate a fair amount of drippings from not-so-well-maintained cages. Pull up to a light wearing a run of the mill pair of roach-stompin' sh!tkickers and you're begging for a rather embarassing moment.
