I just heard on the news that a rider died this week on my favorite local twisty. He apparently took one of the blind curves too hot and drifted over the line. A car was coming in the opposite direction. It didn't help that he wore no gear or helmet.

Ride smart people. Ride Safe.

Obviously that totally sucks  but just as they say in MSF class, an accident usually occurs because of several factors, not only one:
1) he rode over his abilities - big mistake - in traffic one should go 60-75% of his/her abilities to have a safety margin for emergencies.
2) no gear at all...
3) bad luck - a car was in the curve...
If any of these 3 factors were only a bit better, he might have been saved.

Be smart, be safe people!

PS - on cynical note: one less squid on the roads

007 you just showed no class.

Just because he drifted over the line doesn't make him a squid. Almost all of us I'm sure enjoy riding through some twisties. Who knows what happened that made him go over the line. He could have been trying to avoid something or just had a bad line like various people have had at times. Don't throw him into the squid category. Sheesh man... really....

Just cause no EQ, does not = squid (shoots off in various directions at high speeds). There's plenty of people who ride who choose not to wear EQ (I personally prefer EQ and will always wear mine).

I guess what I'm really getting at is, some respect for the deceased. :(

Yeah, I know it is NOT nice to talk bad of deceased people...but, my message was for the living, trying to hammer home the safety point...I'm just doing the dirty work nobody else wants to do - too much political correctness in this country - you are not supposed to speak your mind if you have a negative opinion???? Let's just pretend we live in a wonderful perfect world, and if anything bad happens nobody is responsible for it! I refuse to play this ostrich game  People who CHOOSE to ignore the safety rules are basically asking for it...

I agree with 007 ... if someone dies because they didn't do everything possible to protect themselves, that's "Darwinism in action".

There are thousands of former motorcycle riders who are dead or living with handicaps because some idiot in a car wasn't paying attention. I feel sorry for those people and their families, and those who are living a full life in spite of their injuries have my greatest respect.

Today I witnessed numerous bikes out on the road. Many were in full gear and enjoying the day ... others wearing a helmet (required by law), a loose t-shirt, shorts and sandals. Either these people have never heard of road-rash or are simply convinced that "it'll never happen to me".

A bit of advice ... IT WILL HAPPEN TO YOU! And when it does ... IT'S GOING TO HURT -- BAD!

Most don't even think about it, but you can get hurt without even crashing. Just let your girlfriend's foot slip off the peg (which is about 3" above the exhaust) ...

Sorry, but it just pi$$es me off when I see idiots on bikes ... they give the rest of us a bad name (and higher insurance bills).

BTW ... I spent $100 yesterday and bought my third biking jacket ... this time a summer model, but with CE-certified elbow, shoulder and spine protectors.

I'm all about taking responsibility for your own actions. There are things that happen that are out of our control as well. Who knows what the circumstances were of that crash. No argument that he could have been pushing the limits too far and paid for it. I personally just don't like making the assumption and I guess would just prefer to think of it as an accident and not "some squid". That's just my outlook.

Now, if you took some twisties at too hight a speed and wrecked. Then, came to me telling me how it was all the road's fault and the town should be sued because they didn't make the road properly, I'd promptly remind you how it was your speed and throwing your bike into the corner without recognizing the conditions of the road, that got you in that hospital bed.

Peace

I saw 3 deadly motorcycle crash reports on the local news this summer - and I only turned on the TV about 10 times. Throughout the season there must have been dozens and dozens of deadly crashes. It is a sobering reality indeed.

Point taken. I did assume he was riding too hot and by no means meant to infer that he was squidy. I'm just soo thankful for the MSF and Proficient Motorcyling book and all the input from this site (saftey) that pops up in the back of my mind when I ride (ex. you better slow dowwn!!! or What's around that blind curve) I don't mean to throw dirt on the dead only help me (us) think and stay among the living.

haha...sorry, the laughter is not at the crash at all, but at the definition of "squid". I'm still a rookie rider, and I've always thought of squids as Navy. I like the terminology applied to bikes, though. Ok, I'm done laughing. Seriously though, if that rider had been wearing gear, there's a good chance he would have survived. Granted he'd be pretty thrashed, but no doubt would have avoided severe (if not instantly fatal) head injuries and extreme blood loss from skidding.
