On my short ride today, my speedometer stoped working. I decided to head back since the weather was looing a bit iffy, and then ran my hand up the cable to see if it was attached to the speedo. It seemed that the connection was loose since I could tighten it by hand, which I did. Unfortunately it started raining so I have no idea if it fixed the problem or not.

The one thing I did notice was that I got a lot of black grease on my fingers. Even if tightening it did solve the problem, will the lose of grease be something should be concerned about? If it didn't solve the problem, any suggestions before I take it to a shop?

I should mention that at some point before I got the bike it was clearly dropped and the speedometer took a hit. I can pull the trip milage reset knob out of the speedo, and the reset function does not work. In addition while the trip milage counter works, is at somewhat of an angle (not perfectly parallel to the odometer above it)

for the grease you can just put some kind of grease in there and it should be good, just to lube the cable. Ebay might have a fairly cheap gauge cluster and sounds like it would be worth replacing.
A loose connection was probably the problem but if not then its inside the gauge cluster and im not sure if you can take it apart and replace certain parts, i know all my bikes can have the gauges taken apart. The cable could be snaped somewhere. Not very experienced with gauges myslef.
