I've heard that the speedometer on a bike will read about 8% higher than actual speed ... is this true? Also, would having a digital display make a difference?

If I read 80 on a digital one would I be going faster than someone with a regular (needle) one?

Yes, yes ... I want to know if I was going faster than my budy.

It varies from bike to bike. Digital shouldn't matter. The Japanese engineers must really think we're all squids, huh?

A GPS will show you the error.

Yeah. GPS is the way to go. Or a good stop watch with known exact distance but a tad harder to get accurate reading
