Sprocket Help!!

2001 GSXR 750

Ok I have went -1 with a vortex sprocket and the 520 RK chain conversion.

The sprocket has a flush/flat side too it and one side that is not. The dealer told me to put the side that is flush/flat away from the engine. Is this correct because i have heard different answers from different people.. No one seems to know..

For crying out loud, man, it's "sprocket"!

Are you saying the teeth are bevelled on one side, or that there's a washer cast into the center?

For crying out loud man thanks for the spelling lesson.. lol

Anyways there seems to be a washer casted into the center on one side of the "sprocket" and Flat on the other. I take it that the side with the washer casted into the center go's towards the engine.

I can almost guarantee that it goes to the inside. Almost. It would serve no purpose on the outside.

That's why I buy a Haynes or Clymer manual for every vehicle I own.

most aftermarket 520 chains are stronger than the 530's that bikes come with stock. it also reduces rotating mass, and therefor allows for more power to get to the wheel.

anyway, vortex sprockets have an arrow etched in them indicating turning direction, so look for that and it should solve your problems.

Ive been doing some research on this also and have found out the reason why the 520 rk coversion kits are so much cheaper. You pay for what you get. I plan on getting a 530 chain and probally will go down 2 in front. Remeber the 520 will limit you more of what sprockets you can downsize. But let me know how you like it once it gets put on.

not true at all about the 520 limiting what sprockets you can use. go to www.sprocketcenter.com and you will see everything you could need for a chain/sprocket swap in ANY size.

Ok i believe you about the limiting the sprockets on the 520 i didnt go to the site but if you got a site to prove then it must be the truth. Maybe you can answer a few questions for me then. If you are going to spend the money on an aftermarket 520 why wouldnt people just spend a little more and get an aftermarket 530 that would be strong and possibly take more abuse. Is going down 3 in the front to much (i dont want to go up 9 in the back cause I dont want that big of a rear sproket) I own a srad 600 so take off isnt the best. So by going the much down in front how much top end do you think I would loose.

the main reasons people go with 520 conversions are:

1. less rotating mass = more hp to the wheel

2. most aftermarket 520 chains are stronger than a stock 530.

your srad 600 came with a 520 chain from the factory, so changing it to a 530 will only cause you to lose hp.

-3 up front is a lot, since the chain will be making such a drastic turn at the countershaft. i would suggest only going -1 on the front, +2 in the rear. you will be happy with that setup. unless of course you are a stunter, and then you can go with a +10 rear or whatever you want. but stick to only -1 in front to save your chain.

good luck!
