I'm pretty new to this forum, or any forum for that matter, but I've already stuck my nose in a few places and so far all is well.

Got a decision to make, and I know how I'm leaning, but the G/F naturally is leaning in a different direction. Now to make a long story even longer:

I have been out of riding or about 11 years, sigh, and I really, really, really want to get back into it. Gonna take the MSF course again, as i flunked the 25 question Learners exam (oh the shame), so that is pretty much a given.

What is not a given is my choice of rides. I have noticed on this site that most of the more experienced riders tend to lean toward buying a bike that is relatively inexpensive then getting what you want as your skills improve. This makes perfectly logical sense to me. And would fall more in my present budget figures then spending the 7K for the bike that i would like to have. I'm just a poor nurse.

To get the bike I desire I would need to get rid of the Expedition and it's freakishly high insurance premiums, and copious consumption of gas. That is how I lean, Illogical as all hell, but I'm the fool who's money always parts ways with him.

All advice is welcome
thanks

if youve ridden before im sure the class will get you right back up and running, with a little practice to work the kinks out.

i think i pushed my "outgo" over my "income" when i got my M50, but oh well....haha.

assuming you are talking "cruiser" if you want something used though, go with a marauder or intruder (800 or 1500) or shadow or vulcan...so many to choose from.

give us some of your thoughts and we can help out more.

welcome!

I suppose just wanted to hear some encouraging words, as oppossed to all the reasons I should not buy the 7K cruiser. C50 by the way is the way all things are leaning.

Really mate, it's all a matter of priorities.

My wife and I both have relatively new bikes. I drive a 92 Nissan truck and she drives a 96 Jeep. Honestly, we travel more on the bikes than in the Jeep. The key to our deal is that we both love riding and traveling on the scoots. However, when I got back into motorcycling several years ago, my wife was less than trilled. But gradually she saw how I enjoyed it and learned to ride herself.

Sounds like you are on the right track though. My suggestion, get a late model used cruiser, one the girlfriend can ride two up on comfortably, get rid of that honkin' big Expedition gas guzzler and get some basic transportation.

Bad news, once you get the motorcycle fever, it seldom goes away.

Thanks all for the encouragement. Christ when I reread my post it looks like a whiney little bastard wrote it. Like I said just wanted some positive reinforcment of bad financial decision, but a smart life one.

You live for a very short time, but you are dead for ever. Get what you want, If she is telling you what to do now, what until you get married.
GO GET A BIKE and when she asked to go for a ride on a nice hot day give her a dig and say " I thought that you did not want me to get a bike".

Some more things to consider here. You say plan to get rid of the Expedition to buy a bike. Is the Expedition paid for? If not, are you upside down on it? Is it your only vehicle? Unless you're really hardcore, you won't be riding a bike year round.

I won't even get into the issue of the controlling girlfriend. I had bitter experience with an ex-wife like that, only it wasn't about bikes. Just guns and everything else I wanted to do she disapproved of.

If you think you might need the Expedition sometimes then can't you look at a cheaper bike?
There is nothing wrong with having a choice when you walk into your garage.

Love the Expedition. Tired of 13mpg, and Insurance rates that are way out of proportion (unless you count those 2 speeding tickets last year). I've done the Hard Core thing, when I was a kid, and the first time I was caught without my rain gear during a downpour, I went and bought an Accord the next day. Would definitely get another car, just a major downgrade to A-Z transport as opposed to the comfy ride I now have, and in so doing afford the new bike I really want.

Now you're talking!

And while you are trading, take your girlfriend to a biker bar and see if you can trade her in on one that likes to ride. Oh never mind, that probably wouldn't be very nice.

i wish i could talk myself into a simple transport vehicle. instead of a 30k car and 7k bike i could get a 7k car and a 30k semi-custom chopper!

Yeah P you always have plenty of cash, untill you want something else. Story of my life life.

As to the G/F riding, well she does, only her rides have four legs and a mind of there own. I support her and all, but damned if one brain ain't enough for my riding pleasure.

I told my girlfriend that when she turns 40, I'm going to trade her in for two 20-year-olds.

She just celebrated her 40th birthday - and after taking a close look at her 20 year old daughter, I've decided having two of those around wouldn't be healthy (physically or mentally). I guess I'll keep my girlfriend :p

Compromise! Just get one 20 year old!

As for Scourge, go get the bike you want and park that guzzler at the very least.

For me, I'm getting rid of our "new" cages and will take the money and restore my old 1969 Ford Ranger pick up for us. Even my wife likes it better than the new ones.

Be carefull with that it could be dangerous if you are not wired for 220 :) (electrical joke  )

Scourge don't forget to look at used bikes, there are a lot of 2-3 year old low-mileage bikes that people bought as toys and have become bored of. The Volusia is the same as the C50 minus Fuel Injection, floorboards and a few smaller goodies. I saw a '03 in the showroom the other day that only had 720 miles on it I thought to myself I had that in the first week.... They wanted too much for it but I think a private sale used bike might fit your needs.....
