I just got my first bike a 97 Suzuki Marauder vz800. The bike only starts in neutral is this normal or is there a switch that needs to be replaced or does the clutch need to be adjusted.

your bike should have safety switches to prevent it from starting in gear.there is one by the clutch lever and one by the kickstand make sure there in good condition. you can pull there wires and jumper them together to see if it turns over

The S50 I had required BOTH neutral and clutch pulled in for the initial start.
Don't know why they did that.
Don't know how many other Zuki model that might apply to.

With all of the other brands I've owned, it was either/or required, not both.

I assume the safety switch attached to the kickstand works fine because with the engine running if you put the kickstand down the engine dies.
