Hey guys, I know this is typicas of the Savage, but is there a way to get the backfiring to stop?

I have a '98 Savage 650 and it has a Supertrapp aftermarket exhaust on it, and new jet kit for the carb. I just bought the bike, and the guy just had this done a few months ago. The bike has 3200 miles on it. It runs great, but just some backfiring.

Thanks,
Tim

Backfiring is VERY typical for the Savage. There have been a lot of discussions about it at www.suzukisavage.com. If you go through the old topics, you will see ones about jetting, exhausts etc... There is one in particular about backfiring. If I can find it I'll post a followup with a link straight to the backfiring topic. I hope you enjoy your Savage. I love mine!

When the collector rusts and fresh air gets in, it causes backfiring. I know that much. Som maybe your aftermarket slip-on isn't sealed and lets in air? I also may be completely out to lunch.

Actually, the backfiring is a very common occurance with the Savage. I'm sure there's a mechanical reason why, but I'd never get it right if I explained it.

However, with a little practice, you'll get a "feel" for when she might backfire and can either throttle up a bit or shift up, depending on your circumstances. For the most part, mine almost never backfires any more because I can "sense" it coming and alter my riding.

Typically, the time when the backfiring occurs (at least on my bike), is when I roll off the throttle and I'm using the engine to slow the bike down, or I just slow down and coast from highway speeds without downshifting. ..

On another note, my son "backfires" fairly frequently too, but I love him and I'll keep him anyway...

Sup fellas,
Hey Tim, you and I have the same issue, My 1995 Suzuki Savage LS650 it backfires! some backfires when downshifting, engine breaking & throttle off to slows down which is kinda normal to me but this time it sounds like I'm doing a drive by shooting everything I downshifts.
