Owned many bikes such as YamahaVMAX (fast but Didnt handle for nothing) Harley Wide Glide
Last Street bike was Harley Road King 95cu" Now ride a DRZ400E tricked out for the dirt.

I'm thinking about a good comuter bike that will be fun to drive, short distance some freeway only 8 miles to work. Maybe some mountain winding road trips. Never owned a sport bike, 6'2" 190lbs been riding bikes dirt and street since the 70's Dont want to spend too much and want to have a little fun. Dont like to get hit with too much wind

Think the SV650S would be right for me?

Well you dont lack the expierence usually needed with bikes such as the SV650 so I would say YES :D it is right for you. It is everything you've listed cheaper then say a Gixxer, cool looking and from what i hear extreamly fun. I only know of two members in this forum that own one and they are Suzukigrl and Louis I believe. They would probaly be able to answer your question a bit more in depth. Here are a coupld of reviews written by other SV650 riders i hope they can help shed a little light on your situation GOOD LUCK BRO. :D

Also check out this professional review of the SV650 vs Yamahas FZ6 and Hondas 599 V-Twins.

The SV650S seems like a good choice as Novaz23 says. So I agree with him.

SuzukiGirl1 doesn have an '04 SV650S. I only wish I had one :( Someday...someday...

drz400, I don't know your financial situation, but have you looked at the sv1000's? They make the about same amount of hp (+/- 109hp) as a GSX-R600, but it is spread more evenly throughout your rpm's. You have the experience to drive just about whatever you want. Here, the 1000 is not much more than the 650. It will definitely give you the handling you are searching for but also be close to what you are used to in V-Twin power. The sv's sit a little more upright than the GSX-R's do, so it will be more comfortable if you decide to take a longer trip than your normal commute to work (which I have a feeling you will after you see how good they handle.) And it does have a fairing that will give you some wind protection. My dealer has a sv1000 that is last years model and he's making a great deal on it. Check out both bikes, but I would say that if you can afford the insurance and all, go for the 1000.

Just my two measley cents.

Just bought a 2003 sv650s. Yeah Baby, Yeah!!!!!!! I too have ridden street and dirt bikes for a long time. This is my first REAL street bike. After 1 week, I have over 250 miles on it, and am wondering if the 1000 would have been the way to go. My dealer said the 1000 had way too much power and that it would "slide-out" on corners. Hmmmmmm. Which brings me the question: How much better do the typical 600's [cbr,gsxr,f1,etc.] corner than my sv650s????? Should I have bought a 600r rated bike?

Dude you only have 250 miles in the saddle of your brand new SV650 and you're already considering a Liter bike? :? No offense but I really think you should just be grateful and thankful about the bike you have learn to master it before you jump out there. What the dealer said was probaly the smartess advice Ive heard a dealer give in years. Be patient you will get that liter bike but first gain more expierence with that 650 bro :D

RE:Think the SV650S would be right for me

Pardon the late reply, but I just joined.

Do Not I repeat Do Not buy an SV650S without riding one for about 10 miles, or at least around town for a while. I too, use to ride a lot in the 70's and just got back into it. Bought a SV650S and, while I love the way it handles and the power, it is killing my wrists. I'm 5'10" and 180. But I'm 62 years old. The riding position is definately for the younger crowd. I only have about 800 miles on mine, but have to work up the "pain factor" to ride it. It's now up for sale, and I'm going to lose my butt on it. Gotta get something upright.

Hey Bill!

I have an '04 SV650S. With that type of riding style, you really have to think about gripping the tank w/ your legs and putting your weight on your butt and pegs. That way, the pressure is not bearing on your wrists. I get sore on my bike, but it's not my wrists. My back, butt and shoulders get sore...the same places that got sore on my upright GS500.

Maybe it still won't be something that you're comfortable riding, but try it before you sell it! :D

I'm not whining, I'm definitely not rich and spoiled, and yes I'm religiously following the break-in procedure, it's just that I just sold a KTM 620rx enduro [with street tires] and it had way more pull, 0-60 speed and torque than my sv650s. I figured for an "apparent" bigtime upgrade it would be fast, fast, fast.

P.S. My butt and back are fine [37 yrs old 199lbs], but my neck/spine is killing me

P.P.S. No I'm from Nevada.

Pretty sure the enduro wouldn't do 130 mph, either. . . geared way lower, that's why the faster 0-60 time, although the reported 3.2 seconds for the SV650S ain't all bad either. But, your right, it's not a superbike.
