I recently bought a used 750 Katana and am trying to tailor my riding style to it. I'm coming from nothing but Vtwins with huge bottom ends, so i'm used to just riding away from idle without a problem. with this bike though, it seems that i have to avoid idle-3000rpm or the bike will load up and stall after 10 or 20 miles. I tried slipping the clutch like crazy from 5k and it seemed to help, but I was just wondering what RPM other people takeoff from. the bike has a V&H full exhaust, and i'm sure it didn't get the right jetting after that mod and is running rich, but I am trying to avoid ripping those carbs off for as long as possible. has anyone had any problems jetting this motor w/ aftermarket pipes installed? Thanks guys.

I leave hopefully somebody with more mechanical exp answer this because that's what I believe the problem to be. Nothing to do with RPM's when taking off.

There's definately something wrong. That bike should pull from a stop like mad. What do you mean by "loading up"?

Are you sure all cylinders are firing and that your timing is right?

I had a 1975 Honda CL-360 which was great fun to work on, but also a very large pain in my @$$ at times.

If you're having to give it large amounts of throttle to start it out without stalling, you likely have a bad fuel-air mixture, and possibly your ignition timing is off. Have you pulled and checked your plugs? Are they covered with carbon? If so, you're running too rich and should check your carbs and even your air filter to make sure you're getting enough air in there, and to make sure your carb floats are working to keep too much fuel from entering the air stream.

I'd tend towards it being a fuel-air mixture problem. However, timing is always useful to check if you have a timing light. (cheap at most auto-parts stores, and easy to use if you have a Clymer manual for your bike etc.).
