tap tap tap tap

My '81 GS450S has a very distinct tapping sound, which judging by pitch, I think is coming from the heads somewhere. It happens at idle and up a bit, and then it either goes away, or it just gets drowned out by the rest of the engine revving up. It's fairly constant, and doesn't seem to get any louder, only faster (changes with RPM). Any ideas? Thanks
