So every rider I have ever spoken to has always said "its not if you wreck, its when". Well...I no longer have to ask myself the question of when. Here's what happened:

Last night I rode up to a buddy's house in Maryland. The ride was long because I fought rush hour traffic to get there, but we were supposed to be going to his parents house in the country that night so it was going to be worth it. Well I get there, we saddle up for the ride to his parents house (another 45 minutes to an hour) and go to get gas. As we left the gas station we took a back way to the road out by his house, as it was the way we needed to go to start our journey. We were riding well enough apart so that we had time to react to anything because the roads were a little damp from a rain that had already subsided. As we top the crest of a hill we see a Blue Aveo (I hate these cars) attempting to turn left. He stalled his car and the impatient guy behind him took the turn between myself and the rider ahead of me. The guy in the Aveo started his car and attempted to cut the turn right in front of me but had started off in third gear (I would later learn from the cops) and stalled again. At this point I had nowhere to go, and nothing else to do, so as i slid (I was on my brakes to hard) I turned my skid into a high slide. I ejected from the bike going about 30 miles an hour, slid for about 15-20 feet while my bike went slamming into the front end of the Aveo, subsequently lodging it underneath his car. As soon as my slide was over I stood up and looked around. I checked myself out, no injuries (Thank God). My jacket was ruined and my bike looked to be in bad shape, but I was ok. My riding buddy had pulled a quick U Turn and was arriving as I got up. The guy driving the Aveo was running towards me asking me if I was alright, if I was hurt. Meanwhile my riding buddy began to verbally berate him on his inablity to drive.

So now we have both made a claim on his insurance. His insurance couldn't tell me legally what he said, but there is no question about liablity and I shouldnt have a problem getting my bike repaired/replaced. No pictures were taken by the police, but my buddy did manage to get some that night and earlier today. I will post them as soon as I can. In the mean time, I'm no expert but I think my bike is totalled. The whole front end is pretty much gone. It became lodged underneath the guys car and when he pulled his car off, the whole front end (plastics, lights, some tubes) ripped off. My bike is now leaking what looks like oil and brake fluid, the oil cooler is hanging on by a thread, the tank is dented and scratched to hell, the pipe is hust as bad, just about every piece of plastic on the bike (with the exception of the one piece on the tail on the opposite side of the slide) needs to be replaced. Also the clutch cable might be broken or something worse because we couldn't get it into neutral to move it, with or without the clutch. I'm hoping they total the bike out, pay off the lien and allow me to buy something new.

I wont know anything till Monday, but I wanted to share this experience with all of you. You never know when its coming, and believe me, I'm walking talking proof that if you wear your gear the likelihood of you walking away from an accident are much greater.

I'll post pics soon.

Glad to hear you had the gear and walked away from it in one piece. Sounds as though you will be getting a new bike. Time to start window shopping and let your insurance company do the talking. Any calls from the other party, simply refer them to speak with your adjuster. Don't say a thing. Glad you are OK!

Yeah it sucks but on the claim I hit them up for a new jacket and a new helmet on top of the bike...hopefully the amount is to much and they just total the bike. Its like a car thats been severly wrecked...its never the same after you get it back and I dont want that with this bike. As much as I loved it, I would rather have something else that I wont have to worry about.

Is there a dent or any frame damage? If so, most companies will automatically total it rather than assume future liability by trying to repair it.

Keep that cool jacket! Good reminder to ride safe! I have several reminders in my garage to see every time I get on the Gixxer!

Why didn't you just use your harpoon turn assist? You know, the one from your first movie. Mine really helps when I'm autocrossing. You just have to be careful what you fire it at. The guy with the big cooler was pissed - I ruined his bratwurst.

Glad you're ok. What's life without the occasional adventure, right?

The Harpoon Assist is only on the truck (the Batmobile). The bike was awaiting an install to have its own and never made it.

GOD your jacket is ruined? The one you probably won't be able to find ever again? Man that's almost worse than the bike because if it's totaled you can get another one of those.

The important thing is that you are safe though. I wonder... the fact that you highsided and slid a different direction than the bike might have been better than lowsliding it into the car with yourself close behind, or staying on the bike on both wheels sliding into the car. You might have lucked out big time in a situation caused by bad luck.

Glad that you're OK, Batman. Too bad about the SV ... but as I have said before, metal and plastic can be replaced ... but not human life and body parts.

:wtf: Was the cager a total noobie? Sheesh. If he can't handle a manual transmission, get him the f**k off the road! If I stall when trying to pull away from a stop, the first thing to do is to put it in FIRST and try again - after the traffic has cleared! Where did he get his drivers license - found it in a box of Cracker Jacks?

I held my breath until the part where you said you weren't hurt. So manby folks aren't as lucky.

Way to pull the highside and get ejected before impact!! Wow, what a story! You got lucky. Great gear testimonial.

So . . . what type and color of 'Zuk will we be pimping next?

Wont know until I talk to the insurance guys. I talked to the bike shop already and asked them to sway the numbers if its close so they will total my bike. I told them that if they do, then I'd buy a new bike from them the same day. Who knows but I'll keep everyone posted.

You don't have to settle for what the insuance vampires offer, if you don't think you are being fairly compensated. They will often try to lowball you on a settlement - so don't hesitate to threaten legal action if they're ripping you off and be ready to follow through on the threat if they're not forthcoming. Maybe mention neck pain... As a previous post says, be certain to get new gear as well as your bike paid for. They will most certainly total your bike.

More importantly, you're OK.

Edit: When I said they will certainly total your bike, I thought you were riding your '96 Katana 600. Since you were on an '04 SV650, I have to say that I have no idea if they'll total out your bike of not. Sorry...
