I've never rode with a backpack or any kind of luggage strapped to my bike ever. but, I would think that on your back, unless it's really tight it's going to shift weight when you go around a turn and lean. bad thing. might make you crash. my vote is for on the back of the bike.

Do you shift on the bike when you ride? Nope. That's because of the inherent balance two wheeled vehicles offer. Your backpack will always pull straight down, just like your butt does.

I've ridden with a backpack many times. The 'coolness factor' takes a notch down, so sometimes I would strap it down. Depends on the load, I suppose.

I have ridden w/a backpack thousands of times, literally. My only worry was if I crashed, and I had something heavy in the pack, how would that affect my injuries? I was always worrying about something in the pack breaking my back if I hit an object just right. Or, making an injury worse by rolling over several times with it still strapped on.

I never crashed (while wearing one anyway), so I haven't had to find out.

You will be OK regardless.

When I had a straight office job :( , I picked up a backpack at Office Depot $45.00, that was a very heavy material plus the interior was designed as a briefcase arrangement. It also had a padded compartment for a laptop. Perfect for school or an office job. Plus in the event of a crash you can use your big bucks laptop as a back protector! One thing to look for is the cut of the straps. Try get one with contoured straps that won't bind under your arms, especially if your bent over on a sport bike.

I use a backpack all the time.I chatted about this with friends a while ago regarding the damage you could do to yourself by landing on something hard in your pack, and we decided that if you come off your bike you are going to land on something hard anyway so why worry about it!

Just do what feels comfortable and most importantly,ENJOY IT!

type of backpack

if you've got a single strap backpack these can get blown around if they're not tight on your back, or have very little in them.

I've ridden with backpacks for a while and as long as you get a good dual strap, or well-fitted single strap, it shouldn't affect your riding.

finally, one minor point, if you've got a really heavy load in the backpack its going to shift your center of gravity up some, so it could affect your corning.

IMHO, securely strapping a bag to your bike would be better, it'll keep the center of gravity lower, it will not flap in the wind as it might if not securely cinched to your bod, you will not have the weight or the pull of the bag on your shoulders affecting you arm mouvement, it will decrease rider fatigue.

There are many good tank bags out there that'll rest on the gas tank held in place either by bungee cords and/or magnets. I like these because you can keep an eye on your stuff and not arrive at your destination only to discover that your stuff has been blown off the bike somewhere. Many of these tank bags have shoulders straps that come out of a concealed compartement and convert the bag into a backpack.

Hey Uncle Bob,

Wisdom is a powerful tool...

soon2Briding, :)

either cinched to ur body or strapped 2 the bike will definitely decrease rider fatigue, but everybody is different...!!!

Also tank bags are a good option. it will not make you feel alittle constricted of movement or tied down, compared to back pack cinched on your body.

Rde Safe... have Fun...
