New bike with 200 miles, is it really necessary to adjust the valves at 600 miles? Anyone know what percentage actually need adjusted at 600 mi.
I would like to wait for a while if I could. Thanks for comments.

Yes. This is because the valves are still mating to the seats. I just did an adjustment on my 1100 racebike w/maybe 100 miles or so on a fresh motor. All valves were in spec, but 14 out of 16 were on the borderline of being too tight. Valves that are too tight have a tendency to bend or break in a worse case scenario. It also gives you a chance to see how the top-end is looking.

Just get it done, and don't worry about it. This is one initial service you should not skimp on. Put it this way, if you are spending the hard-earned $$$ on a new bike, why not do it right, and have it last for a long time? Once the valves are broken in, then the adjustment period lengthens immensely.

Another thing I've read can happen is when the valves get so tight they don't fully close heat leaks past and burns stuff. Just about every bike manual on the planet tells you to do a break-in valve check. Do you really want to gamble based on "percentages"? You have all this money invested. Don't throw it away on an engine rebuild. Send it to me, instead.

[sarcasm] Some of the features on this and similar forums allow you to set up a signature listing your bike's make, model and year of birth. Another way is to just type it in when you ask for help with your bike. [/sarcasm]

Note to administrators: How about a "your bike" field in the user profile? Thanks.

Bike's make? Doesn't everyone have a Suzuki?? 8)

As far as I know, there are no easy ways to modify the user profile templates, but John Scott might have an idea on how to od it and especially if it's feasible. Of course, everyone can just put the bike they have in their signature directly as some of our user already do.

Now, about that sarcasm

Why if you have a computer can you give advice???

The REAL answer to your question is this, depends on what model it is.
If it is a GSXR then NO, not until 15500, if you have a GSX 600-750 yes at 600 miles it needs a valve adjustment, and every 4K after that, and no you will not void your warranty if you do it yourself, but you MUST retain the receipts for your oil and filter and if the dealer has lightspeed ask them to indicate the mileage on your slip, and alway have the parts guy make the slip out to you in the computer so it can be found at a later date if necessary. Never accept a slip made out as cash. And don't go cheap and buy a **** oil filter or Walmart oil, it's not worth the end cost (motor failure). And yes Motorcycle specific oil is different, the zinc and phosphorous content is much higher and is the only thing acceptable in a motorcycle engine.

Good Luck,

a fram oil filter is still a fram filter whether you buy it for $3.00 @ wal-mart or $15.00 at a bike shop--same with the oil if it meets all the specific needs for a bike---oil is oil----
