Darwinism in action, won't be long.

It really gets me to see and hear about that stuff. Bikes do not give you a license to speed, but I know it is tempting. I have done that too, many years ago, but were afraid we were going to get caught, so we always tried to find less traveled roads, and private tracks.

There seems to be more of a "It's my right" attitude now days with less regaurd for others. Doing stuff like that is bad enough, but with a passinger? Stupid.

Not only srupid but it's a heavy cost to society and to other riders. Itcost society a arm and a leg picking arms and legs off the pavement, it cost us as motorcyclists higher insurance fees and the possibility of losing some of our rights when Big Brother uses stats to pass new laws.

Man i was shocked to see this girl in booty shorts with a damn tank top, if she fell off the bike at that speed the only thing that would be in tack would be her head because of the helmet i felt really bad. Also they lane they took to go around me was covered in gravel and sand lucky for them God showed them mercy and didnt allow them to fall because if they did they would have smacked into a Cement lane divider at 100mph+ and then you wonder why ppl dont like bikers on the rode its because of these HOT ROD idiots showing off not respecting there machines if you want to do this crap take it to a track not on public highways please

OK I'll add my rant...... Driving into work this morning. Great day in Seattle, been really warm. Heading down Hwy 99 north of the bridge, into downtown Seattle. 4 lanes with a 3rd southbound (direction I am headed) lane that merges in. I can hear him coming..... lanes are pretty full, traffic is going about 30 mph, posted is 35. A red blur in the 3rd lane... he must have been doing over 70...... flies past... at the merge I can see him popping in and out of lanes... the guy was really nuts... he was shooting through some really tight spaces between the cars. No wonder bikes get a bad rep..... Just takes a few of these guys....

Do people like that really believe that the poor girl in the back is impressed? He thinks its cool but shes scared to death. Ride like that and risk your own life, not the person you probably love sitting on the back. You have to have no respect for the person on the back who has no control over their life desperately hugging your sides praying for you to slow down.

Sadly some girls do like the fact these guys ride fast with them on the back, its more of a bragging thing. The sad part is they truly do not know how dangerous it would be hitting the asphalt at 60 mph let alone hitting it at 100mph. The girls that they take on there bikes usually are girls with little to no moral values and just are seeking affection and attention and the guys that ride them usually are creeps looking to get laid. Its a sad cycle but its really prominate here in Maryland/Virginia/Washington D.C. Its the only city were the faster you go the cooler you are(to complete morons that is)

Tell you the honest to god truth, I am not a saint on my sportbike. I do hear your frustration in this forum, especially every time I pass another motorcycle. I try to do it respectfully, give a wave as I pass, without scaring them, making sure they see me in thier mirror. In 30, 40, 45, 50 mph zones, commercial and residential, I am VERY well behaved. On the highway, different story. I am not zipping by people with reckless abandon, clipping people, going 140mph, or tailgating. I am moving around 75-90mph (on my speedo which translates 68-82 mph). I am recognizing traffic patterns, looking well far ahead, watching the heads in the cars (for distracted/sleeping/cellphone drivers). In california it is legal to split lanes. I haven't found any indication that there is hard and fast rules besides "when it is safe to do so". I have translated that as when I feel it is necessary to get out of a potential dangerous situation (boxed in by cars, being followed too close, and following too close, big trucks, on ramp/off ramp lanes) I can split traffic if going under the speed limit, so as not to scare the driver, but negotiate between traffic with careful consideration, and a moderate buffer zone.

I guess I am looking for "your not the problem" remark, but I could go for, well, at least your not driving in the breakdown lane.

She will get a quick crash course (no pun intended) in how dangerous it actually is if she experiences bouncing down the shoulder and off the road or into a guard rail like a child's discarded rag doll out a car window. If she survives, she will be wishing she died when she sees what is left of her road rashed and tattered body afterwards.

Her only hope is that dumb luck and St. Christopher is watching over her and her mentally retarded "boyfriend" to keep them and others around them safe......somehow.

//Dan, you and I are on pretty much the same page. I worry about 'safe', and disregard 'legal' for the most part. I don't split traffic for the most part, I do signal my intentions, and I'll even open a place for someone to get over if they need to from time to time. I leave plenty of room between me and the vehicle in front of me. I don't pass on two lane roads unless I have a copious amount of space to do so. But if I do have a copious amount of space to pass in I will pass at a high rate of speed. If I have a deserted road where I have 2 or more miles of visibility I will run the speed up. There's one stoplight between work and home that if I happen to be the first one in line at I will take off HARD and run it hard through 3 gears. There's over a mile to the next possible entrance to that highway and you can see clear road in front of you right up to that point.

//In curves I go at a speed where I can stop in the distance I can see. Anything more than this and the first brokedown vehicle just beyond the bend will have you plated to the bumber.

//Nobody beeps at me, or makes obscene gestures, so I must not be offending everyone. I have never had a ticket in 60k miles of riding a motorcycle.

//On a side note, there is a hard and fast rule for lane splitting in Cali. Traffic must be 40mph or slower and you can't exceed the speed limit, IIRC. It's been a while since I lived there, so my numbers may not be exact. While there I usually only split traffic that was stopped at lights. I didn't trust them not to change lanes unexpectedly otherwise.

//I've been a lot better about wearing protective gear since I got the new bike. Used to be I'd go jeans, t-shirt and helmet, with gloves and leather jacket if cool enough for it. These days, the very least you'll catch me in is Phoenix jacket and pants, Hard Drive boots, SPS gloves, and of course a fullface snellrated helmet. When temps don't make it miserable and I don't have to wear specific attire for my destination I wear a Speedmaster onepiece leather. Fashion statement be damned - skin grafts suck.

//Motorcycling for me is about fun. A little fast here and there adds greatly to the fun factor. There's a difference between calculated risk and blatant recklessness.

// If safety is really your highest priority, drive a volvo. No matter how you slice the numbers and what precautions you take and how your ride, motorcycling is inherently about 8 times as risky as 4 wheeled transportation.

all i have tosay is PEOPLE ARE STUPID!!

When One of my friends find out i bought my bike who was like "Dude you need to start doing wheelies and race those stupid imports" I told him i dont wanna do wheelies or speed and die. He just said " Then why the F**K do you buy the bike in the first place?"

Alot of people automatically think if you buy a bike,it means you wanna go fast do tricks, race and probably die and if you dont want to do any of that you should have bought a cruiser. NO.

I bought my bike cause i love the style and look of sport bikes. I love the feeling of control you have compared to in a car. Being out in the open air and feeling free. Plus i love cornering. :) I dont speed in corners i just love the the feeling.

So there's my 7cents worth

I totally agree. I also enjoy knowing that my bike has so much power, even though I know I'd never use it. It's just nice to be able to grin when a Mustang pulls up beside you and revs it's engine because you know you can beat him. I just let him dart off, happy in the fact that I know I could take him. 8)

Yeah today i saw more idiot riders surprisly it was a older guy about mid 40s riding his Honda 600R f4i I believe with nothing on but a tee shirt and some kakis it was sad. Also i saw these two bikers stop at a red light both looked left and right to see if there was any traffic coming, it was so they hit the trottle fast as possible and went trough the red light just barely dodging the cars.

I got this from a website (cali) told to me on another post on this site. I agree, and practice this. 40mph, naw. According to this it is 10mph lower than the posted limit (55mph) in a 65.

Is lane-splitting legal?
Here's the text (verbatim) from the CHP's site: "Lane splitting by motorcycles is permissible under California law but must done in a safe and prudent manner." The text used to also include "The motorcycle should be traveling no more than 10 mph faster than surrounding traffic (without exceeding the speed limit) and not come close enough to that traffic to cause a collision." but has since been removed. Perhaps they wanted to give cops more latitude to interpret what they thought was safe so they removed it.

If I've learned one thing in my entire military career, Common sense isn't common. Otherwise we wouldn't have to tell people to wear gear, or how to tie their shoes, how to fold T-Shirts (yes they do teach that in basic training) , or how to drive a car. My point is that some people either won't think or just don't care. Sorry Novaz but all you can do is get good and mad about stuff like that. People putting themselves at risk are obviously going to pay a much higher price than those they endanger. I hate to call it Natural Selection, but it just seems that way. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink.
