See if you can narrow it down by sound, howard. Is it in the engine, transmission, or driveline?

I tried to listen. I don't really know where was it from. Lack of basic knowledge. But, I think it is the engine. It sounds like the piston moving well and suddently stop. BTY, my bike is 2001 Suzuki VL800.

How come some bikes are fine and some not?:scooter:

I guess it may be something to do with our Senses?

Sometimes I hear the clunk at shutdown and othertimes I don't.

The clunk that I hear on engaging first gear after startup seems to vary too. I suspect that the act of manually backing up the bike while idling has some affect on the gear engagement noise... I don't know why... but I DONT CARE!!!.....

Sometimes I hear every tiny grain picked up and thrown into wheelguards, the more clattering the more I brace for the bike to slip away from under me.
At other times in the same stony conditions I hear nothing but my own thoughts.

Today all I seem to hear is piston pinging. I want better fuel!

Tomorrow it'll be wind/helmet noise. I want a better helmet!

On Friday maybe all I will hear is the sound of silence. I want a better sound system!

Nameless

Smee again,

After the smart arse comments I left last post I went out and gave my VL800 07 C50 an ACTUAL test.

If I shut the motor down in Neutral whether by key or kill switch the gear box mostly emanates a clunk and whir. The intensity varies. Sometimes there is no clunk or whir.

If I shut the motor down with tranmission in any gear by key or kill switch the gear box mostly emanates a clunk and whir. The intensity varies. Sometimes no clunk or whir.

Hmmm so what does this all mean?

My bike makes noises sometimes at shutdown, I always figured it depended on what part of the cycle the crank was in when it finally comes to a halt, sometimes I get a little "kickback" when it dies. I wouldn't worry about it. Like my Dad always says, "if it starts, goes and stops" it's good to go.

OLD thread. But worthy of some clarification.

Almost every bike I've ever had does this sometimes......or all the time......when shut off.

When the spark stops with the engine still moving, the next piston that comes up on a compression stroke won't fire and the compression will make the engine turn backwards maybe 90 degrees or so.
That is just enough to engage the starter clutch/bendix for a second........ sometimes.

Absolutely nothing to worry about unless maybe there are multiple clunks or it is REALLY loud.
