I've been looking on Ebay for a set of leathers, (no bike shops ANYWHERE near me :eek:crap: ) Problem is, I dont know how to figure the sizes. I'm 6'6", 38 waist, LONG legs, broad chested.... any comments?
Everyone keeps telling me I should be riding with leathers, and I agree totally with them. Just need to find some.
Another thing...... all you guys and girls that ride to work, what do you wear? I need to arrive at work wearing a suit (You would think a chef wouldnt, but damn the place I work for). What to do..... what to do

At 6'6" your selection might be limited. Any shops that carry them in your area that would order some after you look at what they carry? Textile 2 piece suits are a good choice too.

Send a PM to Hardware. He recently ordered a set of leathers while in Japan. He is rather large and may be able to give you some clues as his ended up being a perfect fit.

If you shop online, I'd suggest shopping somewhere that has a liberal exchange policy. I've had a hard time buying riding gear online. I finally swore that I would never buy anymore gear online unless I could go try it on somewhere first, both to get the correct size and also to see if I will like it.

I find that leather in particular has a lot of variations in sizing. I normally wear a 42 suit jacket. I've never found a size 42 leather jacket that even comes close to fitting me. Depending on the jacket, it takes anywhere from a 44 to a 48.

Also, depending on what you're looking for, Trinity Racewear in Jo'burg do leathers. I found an ad for them in an old issue of 2 Wheels mag from last year. Tel 011 791 5440 or email @ [email protected]

Also, Bike SA mag has quite a lot of smalls in the first few pages, advertising leathers and other biking equipment. :)

Keep in mind when trying on leathers. They should be TIGHT. Its not a fashion leather jacket, and it is designed to fit very tightly. If it fits loose, its too big and the armor will shift around in a fall.
mmmm tight leather pants make me all randy!!!! :D

Yeah, here's the link to the thread about my leather purchase.

Feel free to PM if you still have any questions.

Good luck!

Oh, on the suit issue...well, I work in a place that can be fairly high profile but I can still enter and walk through the front lobby in full leathers.

I carry my helmet intentionally, as opposed to locking it on the bike, to ensure people know I dress this way because I ride, not because I'm some Terminator/Rocky Horror Picture Show/metalhead obsessed freak.

If you HAVE to enter wearing a business suit, you might want to look at textile one or two-piece suits (Joe Rocket Ballistic, Aerostitch, etc) that can be worn over your street clothes - however in SA I imagine that might get hot for a good portion of the year.

As a chef, can you avoid the suit by entering through the rear (i.e. a loading dock or something) and maybe change once at work? (assuming you have locker space and can store clothes there).

One guy who works in my building has to wear a suit and rides a VFR. He stores the suit jacket in his Givi topcase, wears a lightweight textile riding jacket over his shirt & tie and just rides in suit pants and ankle high dress shoes.

When he parks here, the suit jacket comes out, helmet and textile jacket go into the Givi and he's looking like a million bucks, ready for work. In rain he adds rain pants to the equation. If he ever does go down, however, his legs are about as protected as if he was wearing shorts.

You may want to separate this into two distinct riding scenarios. The leathers for serious riding and your version of the last option listed above for commuting to work. Not ideal, but it is a good balance.

We reserve the right to decide if you are some Terminator/Rocky Horror Picture Show/metalhead obsessed freak.

I do the two set scenario, actually 3 sets.
Leathers for weekends and playing hard.
Textile 2 piece suits for work day commutes.
Two textile versions. One for hot and dry another for cold and wet.

I actually have the exact same set up. JR GPX 2-piece (leathers), JR Phoenix mesh 2-piece (for hot weather), JR Ballistic 2-piece (now for rain & snow).

Great minds think alike!

But I know I'm not some Terminator/Rocky Horror Picture Show/metalhead obsessed freak. I'm a whole lot of other things!

I'm an engineer but computer engineers have the best. At least around here, most engineers (beside my field) are business suits. We , however, can come to work in shorts and t-shirts and running shoes if we want, nobody cares.
