Ok this might need to be in the mechanics corner but anywho....

What octane do you use for your bike. My '04 600 Kat's owner's manual says 87 octane but the dealer when i picked it up said use 92. Which do you use?!?

I use 87 in my '04 gixxer 600 and it runs just fine. That's what the owner's manual says to use too. I don't think newer vehicles need higher octane levels because the valves don't get clogged up like they did in older technology machines.

This has been debated forever and probably will continue....

If the owner's manual says to use 87, then use 87....if it says use 91 then use 91. The manufacturer doesn't put those numbers in there for nothing, they do know a little bit about their product.

Using a higher octane does nothing for power. It may cause a loss of power due to the fuel not getting burnt completely causing lower compression.

Octane ratings are an indication of flashpoint of the fuel, the higher the number the higher the ignition point. Detonation can occur by using the wrong octane.....detonation is never good unless you're trying to blow something up.

aight.. follow up question.. does not the higher compression engines require a higher octane of fuel? for example in a car the higher the compression the higher the octane of gas you should use.. I know the compression of the kat is 11.2 i think  ...

Octane is the fuel's ability to resist abnormal combustion (detonation) due to heat or pressure.

So if you have a higher (than manufactured) compression engine (built) then you would probably benefit from higher octane.
