In a week, my 2003 VL800 one year warranty is up. The question I'm currently struggling with is should I buy the warranty extension or not?
Were talking $590ish for a 3 year extension.
What I'd like to know is some opinions and what type of repairs have people dealt with on 2001/2/3s.

I saw a sign on the service desk that read 'Diagnostics on non-extension warranty problems are the responsible of the owner'. This raises a red flag right there.

Opinions?

Oneida $379 Warranty - No Cancellation

Just checked with Oneida.
The plan is $379 for 36 months and no cancellation clause.

The normal dealer is $590 but a full prorate on cancellation minus $25 admin fee. I guess it all depends on if you plan on trying to get any money back if the bike is sold or totaled.

Both plans are transferrable, with a admin fee.

I never buy extended warranties.

Seems 75% of people here complain about their dealers yet you want to go spend good money forcing you to go back over and over again to those same dealers who'll probably find that anything needing fixing will not be covered by the ext warranty anyways.

While riding my 1800 Wing and posting on the 1800 site I did a poll on who bought a warranty and used it and who didn't but wished they had. About 25% bought an extended warrenty with maybe 1% using it. Not sure if any that didn't buy it wished they had. I too am not a beleiver in extended warranties. Most problems surface in the first year.....It's a crap shoot.........

Ext warranties sound good and probably give peace of mind but these days they sell extended warranties for just about everything. Heck couple of years ago I bought a belt clip for my cell phone and they offered me a extra cost extended warranty on that !.

I self warranty myself by never buying extended warranties, I find out how much the warranty costs and then set aside that amount in case. It adds up, extended warranties on TV's, Stereos, DVD player, computer, fridge, washer/dryer, motorcycles, snowmobiles, boat, cars, furniture, microwave, stove, water heater, cell phone, power tools, etc........

Have certainly saved nearly ten thousand dollars on warranties in the last five years alone. More than enough to cover most repairs that may be needed.

Actually I've had a run of bad luck with my car this year, several repairs needed that added up to over $4,000. So my wife gives me "the" look, "why didn't you get the extended warranty", being way ahead of her I had already asked the service manager at my dealer what repairs would of been covered under an extended warranty ? His answer, only the starter which cost me $500can to have replaced, price of the extended warranty would have been over $2,000can. So I come out ahead by $1,500.

The only warranty I bother with is on tires I buy from Cycle Gear. It costs 10% of the tire price. I usually buy them when they are on sale at 10 or 20 percent off anyhow. Sure is nice when you slice or puncture a tire and it's like new, which I seem to do regularly. :-|

No regrets here, 14,200 miles with only minor issues. I like to wrench and putter on my bike, plus the added convenince of not going to a dealer, and working on my bike on my time. I figure I've saved enough money over the years, I can pay cash for a new one. Of course I'm 54, so I've had enought time to save.

I did and I do, I have had it happen several times that just shortly after the warranty ran out, something needed fixing and it usually was a pretty hefty price, The 36 Month Extended Warranty from Oneida Suzuki is $340.99, that's $113 per year peace of mind (bear in mind, I don't work on my bike or service it, I just ride it, no longer have any desire to work on it)

Now I checked into it, the Extended Warranty from Oneida is Factory Authorized so any Suzuki Dealership has to honor it, if that question came to mind :!:

A Note: SEP must be purchased while the Suzuki Limited Warranty is in force

I too bought the 36 additional month warranty from Oneida. My '05 C-50 has too many first year expensive electronic parts - so the price of the warranty is less than buying just one of many of the new parts. If I never need it, that's even better.

Some dealers sell non-Suzuki extended warranties. Only the Suzuki warranty is honored at all US Suzuki dealers. I bought a third part warranty on my '98 Oldsmobile Minivan and had a breakdown on vacation. I payed a lot out of pocket for that blown head gasket because dealers where I broke down weren't happy with the warranty's reimbursement plan, and the Warranty company told me "Too Bad, read the fine print..." I told them "You SOBs, I should have gotten the GM warranty instead of your crap. Even so, since it was an Oldsmobile, they paid out over 5 times the warranty price in repairs on that POS van.

Third party warranties really suck. The Suzuki Extended Protection Plan would be the only way to go for me.

So far with the C50, I have only had the dealer adjust the valves twice in 12,000 miles and do the recall - I've had no warranty issues.

Re reading your post and seeing that your bike is an '03, I will advise you to forego the warranty, and to try to find a different dealer or an independent mechanic who does good work instead trying to sell overpriced warranties with scare tactics.. Ask other local motorcyclists. I am lucky in that my dealer does execllent work at very good prices, they used to work on my '94 Concours well out of warranty.
