Getting the carb off Suzuki Bandit 1200s

Hi Guys,

I could really use some help on this. I have a 2005 Suzuki 1200s and I need to get the carb out. I removed the gas tank, unscrewed the air box and the other tubes (connects engine to carb) but I know the only thing left connected to the carb (I think) are the throttle and choke cables. My choke barely moves, maybe a millimeter. I tried lubricating it, but that did not help. There is no play, so I'm not sure how to remove the cable from the carb. I also don't know how to remove the throttle cables (I believe these are the dual cables near the center front of the carb).

This is my first bike overhaul, excuse my lack of bike knowledge.

Ok first off remove the fuel tank and the side filter covers

Remove all the pipework from the carbs...inc the pair valve pipes if still fitted.

The book says to label the throttle cables...one is a push and the other is a pull.

Loosen the throttle cables at the throttle end and carbs to give some slack.

Remove the two bolts/screws holding the air filter box.

Disconnect the TPS.

The choke cable needs to be disconnected from the anchor on the starter plate LH side of the carbs.

Loosen the carb boots at the filter housing end ONLY for the time being.

Move the filter housing rearwards slightly to remove the boots wriggling them will help the lips to slip off the carb intakes.

Loosen the carbs from the inlet boots.

Wiggle the carbs side to side to get the boot lips off the carb intakes.

Gently slide the carb bank out towards the right hand side of the machine when viewed from above.

When they are out about 1/4 the way you can rotate the throttle wheel so you can remove the cable ends.

To replace them I just reversed the procedure...get the bank 3/4 way in before trying to refit the throttle cables to the throttle wheel. It is almost impossible to do this once the carbs are fully slid back into the frame as you cannot see nor twist your fingers into the desired position.

Do not overtighten the throttle adjusters at the handlebars or the throttle will bind when replacing the carbs.

I never stripped the carbs from the bank and did one at a time so I had the others to check correct re-assembly against....mobile phone pics are a good idea.

These machines are very susceptible to float height adjustments and also the float needles and seats need to be in perfect condition or fuel will flow out everywhere. Also make certain the fuel delivery pipe has a slight down hill orientation and is not crimped.

good luck

If there is insufficient slack for you to remove the choke cable at the carb mount plate you can remove the left hand switch gear to access the cable there. You should be able to prise the cable nipple out from there.
